About Us
Monk Bar Chocolatiers first opened at 1 Goodramgate, in the shadow of the Monk Bar, one of the historic gates into the beautiful city of York in 1999. Ray Cardy, a former teacher, first learned his craft from his brother in law in New Jersey, U.S.A. Once the technical skill had been aquired further training was undertaken in Belguim. He set up with a vision of making high quality exclusive chocolates with a luxurious taste to remember.
The quality of the chocolates quickly began to gain an excellent reputation with the York public and visitors alike. This allowed Liz Cardy, Ray's wife to also retire from teaching and enter the world of being a Chocolatier. Realising their dream Ray and Liz in November 2002 opened another shop in the heart of York down the famous Street, 'The Shambles'. The opening of this shop also coincided with their son Alan Cardy joining the business.
We continually work on improving and expanding our range of chocolates. After 2 years of trials, searching for the best ingredients, we recently started a line of 'No Added Sugar' chocolates, proving very popular with some of our sugar intolerant customers.
Our range of chocolates for weddings and functions is also continually growing with many bespoke designs for those special occasions, including incredibly eye catching chocolate sculptures.
The two shops have continued to grow in popularity, leading to Ray being invited on BBC Radio 4's Food Programme in November 2004.
We hope you enjoy eating our chocolates as much as we do!
